Description by the team. The notion of Freespace is predominantly political and provides a unique opportunity to talk about today and the urgent. To understand conversation as the only possible path for architecture, and even more so for architecture exhibitions. In 2017, the largest building built in Uruguay has been a prison, a large-scale replica of a generic prison model, imported and abstract. This symbolic fact speaks to the desires and fears of our society, as much as to what architecture is capable of provoking. However, it is not all bad news from the south. Ironically, the new prison was built adjacent to the existing Punta de Rieles Prison, known as the “people's prison”. A unique experience in our country, and in the world, in which the prison is understood as a living and vibrant neighborhood that mimics the outside in the inside, configuring an unexpected Freespace of negotiations and collective projects within a prison.
Thus, two opposing architectures coexist in an almost schizoid way in their understanding of punishment, surveillance, technology, space and, above all, power, freedom and the human.
In this sense, Prison to Prison, An Intimate Story Between Two Architectures proposes to investigate from the juxtaposition of these two different realities, to establish other dialogues that exceed the objects of study themselves, from which we can be enriched, and thus look again and look at ourselves. It is thus a perfect excuse that invites us to reencounter architecture and its generous and necessary cultural dimension that makes possible unexpected empowerments.
